The email program named "Evolution" is the ordinary software for email that comes with the version of the Linux operating system known as Ubuntu. This post is for version 10, also known as "Lucid Lynx".
Here is how to configure Evolution for email with Google mail from the website "Gmail.Com".
The main barrier to overcome is that no separate box exists in setup for the "port", as is found in many other email software like Outlook Express. This minor detail will not permit Evolution to work unless the grammar below is followed.
The port is added in Evolution during setup by following the server name with a colon, then the port number.
- For receiving Gmail email with "POP", use "pop.gmail.com:995 ".
- For sending Gmail email with "SMTP", use " smtp.gmail.com:465 ".
Evolution mail Accounts: Setup and Receiving:
- Edit > Preferences >Mail Accounts > Add For Sending Email > Forward
- > name you want to use and email address > Forward
- > Receiving Email
- > for "Server Type" choose "POP"
- > for "Server" type "pop.gmail.com:995"
- > for "Username" type "your.email@gmail.com"
- > for "Use Secure Encryption" choose "SSL"
- > for "Authentication Type" choose "Password"
- > you may want to check "Check for new messages every 10 minutes"
- > you may want to check "Leave messages on server"
For Sending Email click:
- for "Server Type" choose "SMTP"
- for "Server" choose "smtp.gmail.com:465"
- for "Use Secure Encryption" choose "SSL Encryption" > Forward
- for name, you may just want to type the email "your.email@gmail.com"
- > Forward > Apply > click red X box to quit.
After this, and clicking "Send and Receive", you should be asked for the email password. If this happens, the setup worked.
