The "Sitka Gearslinger" from Maxpedition.Com is a single-strap backpack with several innovative features. It slings from being carried on the user's back to in front. This is ideal for reading field instruments such as a GPS latitude-longitude meter or clinometer, and writing results in a notebook.
My goal is to evaluate such camping gear for carrying notebooks and technical equipment into farm and woods enviromnents. It appears the Sitka Gearslinger may be able to carry:
- Several six-part folders (9 x 12 inches) (23 x 31 cm)
- GPS
- Small camera
- Measuring tape (100 foot or 30 meters)
- Wire flags
- Beaded string for estimating percent ground cover
- Clinometer
- Spring scales for weighing biomass
- Water (3 quarts or 3 liters)
- Dried snacks like granola bars
- Portable microscope
- Knife
- Small shovel
- Plastic and mesh bags for samples.
According to a YouTube.Com video posting by RoscoeBa, the internal size of the largest compartment is 16 inches Long by 11 inches Wide by 3 Inches Thick (40 cm Long by 28 cm Wide by 7 cm Thick). This should be wide enough to carry the several six-part folders mentioned above.
On the contrary, the manufacturer Maxpedition lists the internal dimensions as 15 x 8 x 3 Inches (38 x 20 x 7 cm). I place greater confidence on RoscoeBa since she is probably measuring the size of items that fit inside, and the manufacturer is probably measuring the internal dimensions of a flexible container.
Luggage is frequently purchase more cheaply by vendors than from the manufactuer (Google Shopping Search).
